Yes there are free university courses out there for you to take. A lot of big Universities are starting to offer their course materials online for free as a way of helping to better educate the world and believe that knowledge should be free. You only pay to do the course if you join their on Campus courses. Some free courses may charge a small amount for an actual certificate or something like a $50 enrollment and that is all.

Yale
Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The aim of the project is to expand access to educational materials for all who wish to learn.
No course credit, degree, or certificate is available through the Open Yale Courses website. However, courses for Yale College credit are offered online through Yale Summer Online including OYC professors John Rogers and Craig Wright.
